Technology is revolutionizing the way news is shared and who gets to share it. It creates space for diverse ideas, but it also amplifies polarizing views
The problem is especially challenging for students who consume information on social media and news apps where algorithms manipulate the content they see.
Ground News promotes critical thinking over passive consumption. Our media literacy tools empower students to evaluate news, understand bias, explore diverse perspectives and think critically about their news diet.
WEBSITE & APP
Make Media Bias Explicit
Every article on Ground News is accompanied by a bias rating system that uses data from independent news monitoring organizations like All Sides, Ad Fontes Media, and Media Bias Fact Check. Knowing the bias of a media outlet can help students understand how and why a story is being framed a certain way.
Practice Lateral Reading
Ground News takes a single news story and gathers all related articles in one place so students can easily compare media coverage across the political spectrum. This allows them to analyze important aspects of news coverage such as word choice and tone. They can also filter stories by bias, time and location to get a better sense of the bigger picture.
See Polarization in Action
The Blindspot feature highlights stories that are receiving lopsided coverage. This is a great way to talk about media polarization and newsworthiness. What stories do media outlets choose to cover and why? How does this impact newsreaders?
Understand the Local & Global Perspectives
The interactive Map feature lets you engage with local, on-the-ground perspectives from any part of the world. Help students develop a more nuanced understanding of geopolitical issues by integrating the local perspective, which is often missing from national coverage.
